If you are new to this email or blog this is the place where you will find all of the OREGON specific FIRST LEGO League information. If you are in the FIRST Dashboard as a team coach of a registered team for INTO ORBIT you will be added to this list every week for the rest of the competition season. Every update this season begins with IO (Into Orbit) and a number, that number lets you know which update it is, if you miss an update you can find it on our blog.

1) Team Rosters - Everyone's Least Favorite Task

Your team will need a completed team roster when they check in at the Qualifying Tournament. The roster can only be printed by one of the coaches in the FIRST Dashboard system, the Team Admin does not have access to this. If you are using the Paper Roster and both of your coaches have completed their Youth Protection Background Check then you can print your roster today! If you are using electronic team member consent forms, you will want to add all your team members before you print the roster. Both methods are acceptable!

Electronic Consent Forms

This process is pretty much the same as last year, but it can be challenging for parents. As the coach you will want to invite each parent to the team. Do NOT use the Youth Team Member contact type, make sure you invite Parent/Guardian. Your parents will need to make a FIRST account and add each of their children. They must sign a consent form for EACH child on a team. They will also need your team number to request their child be on your team's roster.

I highly recommend giving this walkthrough to any parents who are struggling.

If you are a coach and you are lost, this guide is for you.

Paper Consent Forms

Paper Consent forms are available in Spanish and English on the FIRST Dashboard. The team coach just needs to log in and download the PDF and print as needed. The paper consent forms can be found under Team Contacts in the same place you would invite Parent/Guardians

For each team member that uses a paper consent form, please handwrite their name on the roster. Then staple the collected consent forms to the back of the roster. You will turn in this entire packet at your qualifying tournament. If your team advances to the State Championship you will need to submit another roster with consent forms (I suggest making a photocopy).

EVERY TEAM MUST Print Your Roster

Every team must print your roster and bring it to your qualifying tournament! This single piece of paper is VERY important to our ability to check your team in for the tournament.  Please make it easy on our volunteers and print the roster and bring it with you for check-in. Not only does the roster show the coach consent forms and Youth Protection (both REQUIRED to participate), but it also shows that you have a valid FIRST Team number for the INTO ORBIT season.

Here are the simple steps for the Lead Coach/Mentor:

If you are still lost, FIRST has directions too!

ORTOP cannot access your team roster or any student information. We can not print your roster for you. We can not see the parent problem you are having. All we can do is use the linked walkthroughs. If you still have questions PLEASE call FIRST!

2) Aumsville Elementary Needs HELP!

Aumsville Elementary is in need of Mentor help for their team! Their mentor is facing health issues and needs help to keep the team moving forward. If you are familiar with FIRST LEGO League and can be at Aumsville Elementary on Thursdays from 2:30-5pm (except on Thanksgiving) It's only three more meetings, but it would mean the world to this team! They are assigned to the December 9, Stephens Middle School, Salem tournament.

3) Presentation Opportunity for Rural Teams!

Barry Bonzack FIRST Alum and Lockheed Martin NASA Orion project employee would love to talk to FIRST LEGO League teams via Skype who do not have access to an expert to share their ideas with. To be able to connect, please reply to his Tweet on Twitter

4) Information Day at Intel

Human Side of space Exploration' Talk w/ Rocket Scientist + Project presentation/feedback w/ experts + Exploration of space shuttle artifacts

Hello FIRST LEGO League teams,

The SCI-FI-6 FIRST LEGO League team would like to invite you to an exciting and informative afternoon with a highly experienced and talented rocket scientist, Mr. John Jennings, on Sunday, Nov. 18th
Mr. Jennings has worked on the J-2 engine of the Saturn V rocket that sent us to the Moon (as well as several other rocket engines!). Mr.Jennings volunteers at Evergreen Space Museum and he is currently helping to restore their Redstone engine, which is the same kind of rocket that first took Americans to space. He has been at the museum for a long time and gives presentations to the public about what it takes to explore space.
Mr.Jennings has graciously accepted our invitation to visit the Portland area to share his knowledge with kids. His presentation will be focused on rocketry and technology. In addition, he will be bringing some artifacts from the Space Shuttle, as well as a few parts of a spacesuit to help students understand the human side of space exploration!!

All teams are invited to attend his informative presentation and will also have a chance to ask questions after that. In addition, there will be a session for each team to present their project and share constructive ideas and feedback with other teams.

We hope that you will take advantage of this important opportunity to learn more about this year's FIRST LEGO League topic as well as interact with peer teams!!

Sincerely,
The SCI-FI 6 team.

4) Presentations at OMSI

Once again OMSI is providing table space for teams to present their FIRST LEGO League Innovative Solutions! This is more than just your 5-minute presentation (although you can do that), this is one-hour of your team reaching out to the public about FIRST LEGO League and sharing their innovative solution with anyone who comes by.  We will be on the main floor in the PUBLIC part of the museum this year, so we should have LOTS of people walking by.

Please sign up for your hour slot on our public Google Calendar.

Currently, we have space THIS SATURDAY, November 17 from 11-5.
I am working with OMSI to add space on December 1 during the same time. That will use the same link if it is available!

5) Presentations at Cedar Mill Libary

Cedar Mill Library is welcoming all FIRST LEGO League teams and anyone who would like to see directions on the website.  Sign up beings this Thursday, November 15th!

6) Stay up to date on the Official Updates!

A very important set of Official Robot Game Updates were released last week! Has your team read them? Do they affect your game strategy? All Official Updates for both the Robot Game and the Project that happen by the Thursday before your tournament WILL be in effect at your event. It's very important to read all of the updates.

Affected missions are:
  • Meteoroid Catcher (M14)
  • Core Samples (M03 & M05)
  • Solar Panels (M02)
  • Satellites (M12)
  • Crater Crossing (M04) - the November Mission Model Discussion was updated to address this.
  • Escape Velocity (M11)

There is also a NEW Project Update! This brings our project updates for this season up to 4. Because this update is so late in the season it will not be reflected in the coach letter for your tournament - please follow it!
Project U04 - This update is to give teams and event managers guidance on what types of demonstrations will be allowed at events. We realize teams may be working on Project solutions that involve the use of liquids, and that they may plan to use prototypes of these devices as part of their presentation at events. Due to potential safety hazards, as well as venue restrictions, we ask teams to bring their Project solution prototype without water or liquid(s) and instead recommend teams present a short video of the working prototype to demonstrate the functionality and/or solution they eveloped for their project presentation.
Please do not light anything on fire, spill liquids, etc. We are a guest in every venue we use and it's expensive enough to find them. I hope your teams and their guests can help us keep the cost down by respecting the venue and keeping all litter and the bathrooms clean!

If your team has not done so already please read the other 3 project updates as well!

7) All Qualifying Tournaments NEED Volunteers!

All of our tournaments are looking for volunteers! Parents can act as game announcers, timers, help with check-in, help with volunteers, help with judge queuing, or be a pit or pratice table admin! If they clear it with the volunteer coordinator they can even get a chance to watch your team compete. Know someone without an affiliation to the team, and would like to have them get a chance to see FIRST LEGO League up close and personal? Encourage them to be a judge or referee - those are the best seats in the house!

You will need to sign into your FIRST account at www.firstinspires.org to use the links below.
Also online are both of the state championships! We are looking for a day of event volunteer coordinator or two and a new kitchen team as well as the 200 other roles we need to be filled!  Don't worry, we will still have wonderful food!

and

Bring your friends, bring your family, bring your frenemies! It's time to get INTO ORBIT!

I know your teams are working hard to get those last few practices in. Some of you are participating in local scrimmages as well. Remember, our journey through FIRST LEGO League is so much more important than what we win! Take time in these next few meetings to step back and see how these kids have grown and changed in just the last few weeks. It's been a busy season! And the finish line is in sight!

Best Wishes,
Loridee
