This post is meant to be an aid, not a replacement for carefully reading the Challenge Guide!
At the Begining of the Match: The broken pipe is located in the middle of the board between the two ramps. It has a loop. This piece is placed on the mat so it is easy to move. The pipe is placed so that the long sides face North and South.
Required for Scoring: Broken Pipe has been moved so it is Completely In Base
Conditions: NONE
Score: 20 points
Note from Oregon Head Referee Tom: Scores at the end of the match if the yellow Broken Pipe (yellow) is completely in Base. The loop is considered part of the Broken Pipe model.
Real World Impact: Broken pipes are a problem in every community that shares water resources. There are over 800,000 miles of water pipe underground in the United States. The average pipe is 40 year's old! Repairs to pipes are very challenging as they require large equipment to access small spaces. Old pipes can experience catastrophic failures resulting in overflows and cave-ins. In these cases, the mess has to be cleaned up before repairs can be made. Pipes can be damaged by tree roots, or joint failures letting foreign materials into the pipe system. Older pipes are also subject to corrosion from hydrogen sulfide.
Discussion: Retrieving the pipe is made easier with the loop, however; its placement between two ramps is tricky. Is it a benefit for your team to remove the pipe and get 20 points?
