Oregon Update: 15

Welcome to the official FIRST LEGO League Oregon Update. All Oregon FIRST LEGO League Coaches are automatically added to this list weekly! In each update, which you can read in an email or on our blog (cross-posted on both G+ and Facebook), you will find out what is happening in Oregon, the important things from Headquarters in NH, and tips to keep your team on track. This blog will be posted nearly weekly and all posts are archived. All official updates this season will be numbered HD# If you've missed an update, please read the archive to catch up!

1) Good Luck Week 2 Teams and Volunteers!
As we go into the second weekend of Intel Oregon FIRST LEGO League Qualifying Tournaments, we wish all of the teams and all of our dedicated volunteers the best of luck. On Saturday tournaments will take place in Medford, Corvallis, Hillsboro, Portland, and The Dalles. Tournaments on Sunday will take place in Bend, Corvallis, Hillsboro, and The Dalles. One-third of the teams who participate this weekend will advance to the state championships in January.

2) Week 1 Tournament Statistics
Oregon held 10 successful tournaments last weekend. 49 of our 120 advancing teams have been chosen and given their invitation letters. In the competition arena, teams demonstrated a wonderful variety of missions. The average (median) team score was 40 points, but one team provided a shockingly high score of 230 points!  Award lists for each tournament have been posted on the tournaments website.

3) Take Time to Celebrate YOUR Success
Every team gets to define their own version of success! Any team that has met consistently and worked hard is a success and they ALL deserve to take time this month to celebrate that success. In 9 weeks your team has achieved an unbelievable amount of learning. They've grown as a team, they've overcome obstacles either in the robotics practice space or at the tournament! They've learned to work together, to apply FIRST Core Values, and most of all they have learned that they CAN do this. Dear coach, maybe you have learned the same thing. Sadly, we just don't have enough awards to adequately recognize every team for their accomplishments in the program. We don't have enough ACE invitations to bring you all to the state championships. That does NOT mean you have failed. It does NOT mean you weren't successful. You ARE successful! You ARE amazing! So take time, and celebrate. Celebrate how you and your team have changed together.

In January, there is lots of time to keep working, to learn, to grow, and to plan for next year. Right now, plan some time to celebrate how far you have come.

4) Share Your Photos!
We want to see your view of the events and photos of our volunteers and your teams interacting! Your photo may be used in the state championship program and ORTOP marketing materials for the coming year! Upload or veiw all of the Intel Oregon Qualifying Tournament photos here:  www.yogile.com/fllqt2017-18 OR you can email your photos to the online album by emailing: fllqt2017-18@yogile.com

Want to make sure you get photographer credit, you can also send a link with your photos to Loridee-Wetzel@ortop.org

5) Preparing for the State Championships
If your team has (or is about to) received an Advancement to Championship Event (ACE) you may be wondering what the next step is. First, read the back of your certificate! There is a lot of very important information there. Next, prepare to register on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week! Teams will get a chance to change their name AND pick Saturday or Sunday. Registration is open for 48 hours, even if your team will not be attending (after receiving an ACE) it is very important that you register to let us know.

If your team did not advance from the qualifying tournament we would still love to see you supporting your fellow teams at the state championships, or as volunteers! Both Championships will be held at Liberty High School in Hillsboro on January 13 & 14, 2018.

Ready to volunteer? Sign up on www.firstinspires.org!

Good luck this weekend! I look forward to seeing all of you at the State Championships!

Best Wishes,
Loridee
