If you are new to this email or blog this is the place where you will find all of the OREGON specific FIRST LEGO League information. If you are in the FIRST Dashboard as a team coach of a registered team for INTO ORBIT you will be added to this list every week for the rest of the competition season. Every update this season begins with IO (Into Orbit) and a number, that number lets you know which update it is, if you miss an update you can find it on our blog.

1)  Verify Your Team Status!

This year's team status spreadsheet is now LIVE! The team status spreadsheet lets anyone see what teams are in Oregon and more importantly lets your team see if they have applied to attend a Qualifying Tournament AND have paid for that event. On November 2nd, the Tournament Assignments will be added to this page.  Team names are the ones you used on your Qualifying Tournament Application form, if you submitted one.  Green YES is good. Do you have a red NO, you either know what you need to do or may need to contact ORTOP, asap!

*Malheur County teams, do not worry that you are not yet signed up for your Qualifying Tournament, you will receive information from Robin soon!

2)  Software Pilot: Are you in?

This year Oregon is participating in the FIRST Software Pilot. This provides some special exceptions to the challenge rules with regards to the programming language used by teams in Oregon and other pilot regions this year. If you are using a non-LEGO MINDSTORMS programming language, like Scratch, Makecode, or Java, please complete this short survey by October 30, because I have to turn in what teams in Oregon are doing to FIRST on the 31st 😀.

If you are using the NXT or EV3 software mentioned in the Challenge Guide (most common option) you do not need to complete this survey.

3)  Presentation with NASA's Dr. Joshi - Hosted by 25099 Robotic Animals

Talk and Q&A session with NASA scientist Dr. Joshi hosted by Robotic Animals.
Time 11-1 pm, Saturday, Oct 27, Q&A may go longer!
It will be at Intel's Ronler acre campus
2501, NW 229th Ave, Hillsboro, OR, 97124
2 adults + kids per team would help maximize kids attending and asking questions.
Dr. Jitendra Joshi currently serves as the integration lead for Advanced Exploration Systems and handles technology development in life support and habitation for several flight experiments. He is also the HEOMD lead for SBIR coordination with STMD.

4)  Project Resources

The Oregon FIRST LEGO League team Project Resource page is LIVE! If your team has a resource that is helpful and should be added to the page, please put it in the comments on the blog or facebook or email it to Loridee-Wetzel@ortop.org with the subject "Project Resource".  I hope this page helps your team finalize their solution path!

5)  Robot Game Questions?

Since October is Project month for teams - and all teams should be putting serious effort into their projects - we don't spend a lot of time talking about the robot or the game. Starting in November we will once again feature each mission in the order it appears in the challenge guide. This will happen only on the blog and on our Facebook page, it will not be sent via email.

Can't wait for November or have a specific rule question?
If you want an official clarification? email: fllrobotgame@firstinspires.org
If you want to verify your understanding of a rule email Head Referee Tom : fll.rules.or@gmail.com
If you have a question about a rule email Head Referee Tom: fll.rules.or@gmail.com
If you have an innovative strategy and want to make sure you didn't miss a rule email: fll.rules.or@gmail.com

Neither FIRST nor Head Referee Tom will weigh in on a game strategy. However, if your team is doing something novel, please be prepared with the rules from the challenge guide AND updates to validate your process.  You may need to discuss them with the referee at your tournament.  This is STRONGLY encouraged!

7)  What my team should be doing right now!

  • Your team should have identified a problem with their first proposed innovative solution for the project challenge and be in the process of deciding how they will overcome this challenge. - if your project is flying along smoothly, I highly recommend a bit more research into why it isn't already being done!
  • Your team should be able to divide tasks and come back together as a team to share what progress has been made on each thing.
  • Your team members should be able to describe what the FIRST Core Values mean to them.
  • Your team should have their tournament application in and have paid for their tournament. Aren't sure? Check the status sheet in section 1!!!!
  • Your team should be sharing their ideas with an expert in the community and getting feedback. This is not their presentation! This is a process of learning if they are even on the right track with their solution.
  • Your team should be doing something fun that brings them together as a group: design a space patch, design a logo, design a shirt (if there is a budget for it).
  • Yout team should decide how they will resolve conflict, as the pressure builds next month conflict will be more common.
  • Make sure there are enough snacks! Snacks are an important part of most FIRST LEGO League team long sessions.
  • Decide if your team members will use the digital or paper consent forms for this season (more on this in the next update).
  • Both team coaches should have all green checkmarks in the FIRST Dashboard.
  • You didn't say anything about the robot, what about that? Oregon teams are encouraged to spend October (especially this year) working on the project challenge. November is plenty of time to meet the robot game goals!

Thank you all for all your hard work and cooperation with this difficult time for me. I am working on coming back and hope to have frequent updates for you throughout the season. There are still volunteers checking my email, so don't hesitate to send a question and we'll get you the best answer we can. If your email was lost in the black hole that currently is my inbox, feel free to resend it.

Best Wishes,
Loridee
