M5: Treehouse
Welcome to the November Mission Model Discussion! From now until November 22nd this space will feature ONE part of the FIRST LEGO League CITY SHAPER game challenge per day. The Robot Game is only 1/4th of the overall FIRST LEGO League challenge for teams this year!
This post is meant to be an aid, not a replacement for carefully reading the Game Guide and Updates!
At The Beginning of the Match
The tree begins in the Northwest section of the mat. The tree has a Small Branch that is directly above it’s outline on the mat. All building units except 1 white unit and 1 blue unit start in Home.
Points
10 Points each building unit - If a unit is independent and supported by the tree’s Large Branches (middle part of the model)
15 Points each building unit - if a unit is independent and supported by the tree’s Small Branches (small upper section of the tree towards the Southeast corner of the tree model)
Required Scoring Conditions
The building units must be supported independently on one of the tree’s branches at the end of the match. No equipment can be touching a building unit for it to be scored.
Note from the Oregon Head Referees
All of a unit’s weight must be supported by either the Small or Large branches. This means that if a Unit touches both sets of branches, it will score zero. See Rule 34
Real-World Impact
Building in trees is not new, but it is getting a lot more involved. Now entire houses can be found in the branches of large trees or spanning several trees that have grown in close proximity. Sometimes this is done purely for aesthetic reasons, allowing people to be closer to nature and feel the sway of the tree. Other times, it is simply more practical to build from a raised platform and a tree naturally provides that opportunity.
Reminders
Do not leave any attachments or your robot touching the building units. This will cause your building units to no longer be independent. You may score building units in this mission, but they can also be used in other missions, like mission 12. Make sure the team knows what is planned, if anything, for the building units in Home.
