Greetings FIRST LEGO League Oregon,
In today's FIRST LEGO League Oregon Update we will cover these items:
- Qualifying Tournaments
- National Registration Closing
- Free Table
- Team Workshops by Teams
- Team Support - Extended 1 week!
- Using the Team Meeting Guide
If you are new to this email or blog this is the place where you will find all of the OREGON specific FIRST LEGO League information, as well as helpful guides to get your team through the CITY SHAPER FIRST LEGO League season. Coaches and team administrators in the FIRST system for the CITY SHAPER season will be added every Monday until March, automatically. Every update this season begins with CS (CITY SHAPER) and a number, that number lets you know which update it is, if you miss an update you can find it on our blog.
1) Qualifying Tournaments
Qualifying Tournaments are 50% of the FIRST LEGO League program. By attending a qualifying tournament your team gets to learn from their peers, practice their communication skills with 3 separate panels of judges, come together as a team in a way they never have before, and have loads of fun. Sure, only a small percentage of teams will be receiving a trophy or advancing to the state championships, but all teams have the opportunity to take home new skills and ideas that will help them grow and improve as engineers, teammates, and people. The impact the events make on kids I've watched grow through this program can not be understated. All of the Intel Oregon FIRST LEGO League Qualifying Tournaments will take place on December 7, 8, 14, & 15. Teams in Malheur County will register with Idaho again this year, the following does not apply to you. Your team should select 3 tournaments they are able to attend (unless you choose La Grande, that event needs more teams!) Your team will be assigned to one of those three events unless all of those events fill prior to the receipt of your application, then your team will be assigned to the nearest event that meets your date or location preference. Mentor Graphics is happy to welcome teams with financial need this year, they will be providing lunch and assistance for these teams. ORTOP asks all experienced teams without financial need to not choose Mentor Graphics as your 1st choice to allow these teams the opportunity to learn at this event. If the events do not fill we may select to send your team there to fill the event.

Teams may pay their qualifying tournament application fee anytime between now and October 31st. Applications are not considered complete until the payment is received. Your team must be nationally registered as your payment is matched by your official FIRST LEGO League team number!
If your team is in a neighboring county, but not registered under the Oregon Region, please sign up to be included on tournament information using this form. Or change your region to Oregon on your team profile on the FIRST Dashboard.
2) National Registration Closing
Registration for new teams in Oregon will be closing on October 9. Teams must have a national registration to participate in FIRST LEGO League events in Oregon. National registration is $225 paid to FIRST in Manchester NH through your Dashboard. This is different than the $200-100 for your Qualifying Tournament Registration. If your team has a number bigger than 60,000 you are not nationally registered! Please complete your payment for this year.If you need help completing your national registration please send an email to Loridee-Wetzel@ortop.org or contact FIRST at 1-800-871-8326

Balaji has a practice table available in the Portland/Beaverton/Hillsboro area with some availability to deliver. Please contact Balaji at rbpiyer@gmail.com4) Team Workshops by Teams
Good news! The renowned FIRST Tech Challenge team Overcharged (12599) and FIRST LEGO League team Master Builders (20540) are starting a robot club teaching kids about the various skills essential to success in the robot field we learnt through our experiences in the elimination matches of the First World Championship and having the best robot performance in Oregon. We are planning to meet every Sunday during the school year starting September 15th, 2019. For the first 4 weeks, the club will meet every Sunday 4:30pm-6:00pm at community room in Bethany Village. Grade 3-12 students are welcome to participate. Everything is free of charge! And, we will have a lot of fun!
Also, please keep in mind that the community room is a small classroom. In order for the best experience for the kids, parents should stay outside the room or quietly inside the room. We reserve the right to not allow any parents or kids to stay in. Bring your laptop and make sure related software is installed for that section. There is no public wifi in the community room.

5) Team Support - Extended 1 week!
As many of you have noticed, ORTOP Team Financial Support did not close this week as stated. It will close the end of September because 9 days is just not enough time to go through the Team Financial Support process. If your team is still waiting on a letter, just know we hit some delays this week. Things will be back up and running next week. Do not let funding be the only barrier between your kids and a FIRST LEGO League team. Also, if anyone has a mentor or 60 to spare, I have lots of people with extra kids across the state!6) Using the Team Meeting Guide
Site Survey
Goals to Check-off this week- Team should be able to think beyond a known solution to a problem to see where another solution is needed for the project theme.
- Team should be able to program a robot to drive and to turn with some accuracy
- Team should learn limitations of driving by rotation, seconds, and turns.
- Teams should understand the Core Value of Inclusion
This week is very similar to last week’s The Client session. Only this time the group roles are switched. Use the same groups you did for the last session, you will switch up the groups after this session. The entire team will be taking the next steps from last sessions stopping point, with each group doing the opposite task of the last session.
In the project, this group will look at an accessible playground solution. They will do a similar analysis to the previous session and then take things one step farther. This time they will think about what other ways they could provide a solution to the problem that is not just the solution provided in the robot game. Group members are encouraged to brainstorm other possible solutions to the presented problem. This is a great next step to working on your team’s own innovation project.
With the robot, the group will learn how the EV3 turns. When driving a car, we turn with two wheels at the front of the car and drag the car is either dragged or pushed around a corner. However, most robots turn by changing the power distributed to the left and right wheels. There are also different types of turns that can be made this way. Measuring turns in degrees doesn’t always get you the kind of turn you anticipate. This team will build onto their programming knowledge and understanding of how the robot physically works.
Next week, we will continue exploring the project sparks to learn more about the CITY SHAPER theme and innovation project requirements, and EV3 maneuvers to prepare our robot to face the challenge table.
Enter the Star Wars quotes, graphics, and fun! Star Wars Force for Change is here to make this year's FIRST season extra fun. Meanwhile here at the ORTOP office, we are rushing towards a new season of competition, fun, and adventure! Team Support is in full swing. I'm back in college on Tuesday and Thursdays, which means those are NOT good days to reach me. We are all working hard to make sure this year's season works better than the laser on the Deathstar! No silly exhaust port weaknesses for us! At the same time, I am one human. If I haven't gotten to your email know that I feel absolutely terrible about that and am working hard to get to you and take care of all the questions this season and all of its new rules (and change of gameplay) bring.
Now is the time! We are going to have a very busy couple weeks while team support wraps up, National Registration closes, and Qualifying Tournament applications come in. Buckle up, we're going to have to blast out of here!
Best Wishes,
Loridee
