Greetings FIRST LEGO League Oregon,

In today's FIRST LEGO League Oregon Update we will cover these items:
  1. Document Order of Official Rules
  2. Free Table, Kits for Sale
  3. Last Chance for Workshops 2019
  4. Volunteers Needed at Maker Faire
  5. FIRST LEGO League 2019 Sweepstakes
  6. ORTOP Team Financial Support - Running out Fast!
  7. How to register your team for CITY SHAPER

If you are new to this email or blog this is the place where you will find all of the OREGON specific FIRST LEGO League information, as well as helpful guides to get your team through the CITY SHAPER FIRST LEGO League season. Coaches and team administrators in the FIRST system for the CITY SHAPER season will be added every Monday until March, automatically. Every update this season begins with CS (CITY SHAPER) and a number, that number lets you know which update it is, if you miss an update you can find it on our blog

1) Document Order of Official Rules

Sometimes, not all rules are made equal... or maybe it's not all documents are updated together. Whatever the reason there is some confusion around the official robot game and project rules. For the CITY SHAPER Season, this is the order we will be using the rules:
  1. CHALLENGE UPDATES - these are coming out fairly frequently. Make sure you check every week for new updates! They apply both to the project and the robot game.
  2. The ONLINE CITY SHAPER GAME GUIDE - initially meant to get everyone excited about the theme while we wait for our official guides, this document is now the home of the official project and robot game rules. Read it carefully!
Here is what FIRST has to say:
Dear US/Canada teams,
As you probably have noticed, there are some discrepancies between the Team Meeting Guides and Engineering Notebooks you received with your Challenge materials or will receive shortly. This is an unfortunate error in our printing process, and we apologize for the confusion. We do have a solution that we believe makes it as easy as possible for you to move ahead with your team and make the most of the new guided program materials:
  • The Team Meeting Guides contain the specifics needed to score in a competitive event.
  • The Engineering Notebook is missing some Robot Game specifics and additional EV3 guidance.
  • You can find the scoring specifics of the Robot Game in the Game Guide here
  • As always, continue to check for the latest Robot Game updates here.
  • Additional recommended EV3 guidance can be found here
If you have questions, please reach out to firstlegoleague@firstinspires.org.  We want to ensure that every team has an excellent experience this season.
Again, we apologize for this mistake. It just goes to show that the problem-solving skills the kids are developing come in handy in the workplace.
With high fives and admiration,
FIRST® LEGO® League
If you have a question about the FIRST LEGO League Robot Game you can email FIRST at fllrobotgame@firstinspires.org or our very own Tom Mosher at fllrules.or@gmail.com.  For questions regarding the project, you can email FIRST at fllprojects@firstinspires.org or Loridee 😄

2) Free Table, Kits for Sale

Jean, in Salem, has a nice table in need of a new home, she is offering this free, but you need to be able to haul it. See the picture to see what you are getting in to.
She also has two intermixed EV3 kits and an extra EV3 brain that has never been used! This she is asking $400 for which is well below the cost of just 1 set!
If you are ready to rehome these items please contact Jean at jean@qpsalem.org

Jean - thank you for being a member of our family for many years, you've had a tremendous impact.

3) Last Chance for Workshops 2019

September marks the end of the free ORTOP Coach, Mentor, and Parent Workshops. These workshops are set up to give any adult the tools they need to support their FIRST LEGO League team members. If you haven't been to these workshops in the last three years, it is probably time for a refresher!

6) ORTOP Team Financial Support - Running out Fast!

It's not your last chance to get in an ORTOP Team Financial Support Award Application, but I may be announcing that all the funds are spent sooner than the September 23rd end date! It is very important to read ALL of the information on the page and share the specifics of the training and preparations as well as schedule of your team to qualify for financial support. ORTOP is thankful to this year's sponsors who make Team Financial Support available for so many teams in Oregon!

Are you a new team? I have funds in specific areas just for New Teams!

7) How to register your team for CITY SHAPER

Only about 1/3rd of the anticipated teams have completed their registration this year! If you are among the 2/3rds not yet registered, and you are not waiting to hear about ORTOP Team Financial Support, please take the following steps:

  1. Create an account, or update your account at www.firstinspires.org
    • Make sure you sign this year's Consent form!
    • If you are a new coach, or it's been 3 years, you will need to complete a free background check through the FIRST system (done by Sterling Volunteers)
  2. On your Dashboard on the FIRST website select the team you want to register (please reuse old numbers before creating a new team - your team number will not affect your rookie status). If you do not have any unregistered teams, create a new team.
  3. Make sure your second coach joins your team. Without two adult coaches you won't have access to the FIRST Consent Form for your team members, or your Team Roster!
    • Returning teams, make sure you update your profile, you will need to select you are required to pay tax where applicable BEFORE you can order your team Registration or Challenge Set.
  4. When everything is ready (you don't need your team members in the online form yet), you can pay your national registration by selecting SHOPPING CART from your Dashboard.
    • Make sure you purchase a Registration for EACH team you will have this year
    • Purchase 1 Challenge set per 3 teams if all your teams are meeting at the same location.
    • If you are purchasing an EV3 you can add this to your cart by selecting  "Select here to view available products for this team" Your team can only use one robot at the competition.
    • Shipping is $10 for National Registration, $15 for the Challenge Set, EV3s do not have any additional shipping charge.

If at any time in the process you face a challenge or error message, FIRST support is fantastic at quickly resolving issues. Use the contact box, call, or email them with any issues you face.

I hope your summer has been amazing. As you and your teams begin to meet and work on CITY SHAPER, remember there is no perfect plan. Things will go wrong and failure is how you know you are actually learning something. If you are at the Oregon State Fair this week, stop by and see the CITY SHAPER field on display in Columbia Hall, it's hanging out in the Northeast corner. Maybe I'll see you there.

I'm looking forward to all we are going to do together in the next few months. CITY SHAPER has so many new tools and exciting opportunities, especially for rookie teams! Watch out experience FIRST LEGO Leaguers this year's game is set up for the rookie advantage - I can't wait to see how you overcome this challenge!

Best Wishes,
Loridee
