Pre-Season CS4 - Connecting Community

Greetings FIRST LEGO League Oregon,

In today's FIRST LEGO League Oregon Update we will cover these items:
  1. Connecting with FIRST Robotics Competition for Summer
  2. Table in Salem
  3. Workshops! Workshops! Workshops!
  4.  Team Financial Support - Apply Now!
  5. Southern Oregon Robotics Camps*

If you are new to this email or blog this is the place where you will find all of the OREGON specific FIRST LEGO League information. Coaches and team administrators in the FIRST system for the CITY SHAPER season will be added every Monday until March, automatically. Every update this season begins with CS (CITY SHAPER) and a number, that number lets you know which update it is, if you miss an update you can find it on our blog.  We are currently in the Pre-Season planning and skill growing part of the FIRST LEGO League Oregon Season!

1) Connecting with FIRST Robotics Competition for Summer

As we continue to grow all of the progression of FIRST programs, the high school teams are looking for more and more ways to connect with FIRST LEGO League during the summer months and throughout the season. ORTOP is happy to encourage these relationships!

Central Oregon
Summit HS Robotics (FRC 5468, FTC 6833 & FTC 8151) will be doing a number of robotics demonstrations this summer.  We talk to many kids & parents who would like to get connected with an existing FIRST team. We would like to have a contact name & email or phone number for each team, and either get permission to share it with interested parties, or so that we can email the names of interested parties to the team contact. *Coach contact information will never be shared by FIRST or ORTOP as per our data protection and child safety policies.

We would also like to invite other FIRST teams to help with some of our demos & community outreach.
  • June 28th - We are doing a 2 hr. robotics workshop for Tech Trek, 1 - 3 PM, 8th Grade girls camp.  We need some experienced FIRST LEGO League programmers to assist groups of 2 girls learning how to solve a simple programming challenge with pre-built & pre-programmed simple EV3 robots.
  • We will be doing robot demos at NorthWest Crossing Farmers Market on 3 days 10 AM - 2 PM, June 15th, July 6th, and August 17th.  If other teams want to bring a FIRST LEGO League or FIRST Tech Challenge robot to demo, and try to recruit team members, adult mentors or sponsors.
  • Oktoberfest September 20th & 21st robot demos, downtown Bend.   If other teams want to bring a FIRST LEGO League or FIRST Tech Challenge robot to demo, and try to recruit team members, adult mentors or sponsors.

Willamette Valley
Willamette Valley FIRST LEGO League teams-
We would like to invite you to join local FIRST Robotics Teams at the Benton County Fair, 7/31 - 8/3/19.
Each day we are going to have 2 FRC teams demonstrating our 2019 robots on a partial field.
When we have done this is the past we often get questions about  LEGO League.
This year we are planning to have space to have a LEGO league team join us.   You can bring this years robot, other robots that you can show off what you do.  We are open to your suggestions for how to do outreach to the public.
The Benton County Fair provides us with free admission and parking.   We are usually at the fair for 11 am to 7 pm, but this could be flexible.
If your FIRST LEGO League teams is interested in joining us or your would like more information please email: Denise.cardinali@yahoo.com
We have very limited FIRST LEGO League teams in Benton County, so we would welcome teams from outside of Benton County and appreciate their help.

2) Table in Salem

There is a FIRST LEGO League table available in Salem, if your team needs a table please contact Amy at akaizerman@sbcglobal.net

3) Workshops! Workshops! Workshops!

This workshop season is shaping up to be a good one! We already have so many workshops on the
calendar! We are still adding a few more and finalizing details on others. This year sign up is a little different than in the past (and I think it's a lot easier). Simply click the city name on the Google sheet embedded in our website to get to the sign-up page for the workshop you selected! If you selected a workshop that is part of a series, all of the workshops in that series will appear on that sign-up page! Wow!

See all the workshops here!

Download the materials before attending here!

Yes, I am still working on adding new locations - is that your school, youth program, or community center? Let me know!

4) Team Financial Support - Apply Now!

Don't let the lack of funds prevent your FIRST LEGO League team from discovering the key needs of the city of the future! Get your ORTOP Team Financial Support Application in today!

Teams do not need to be affiliated with a school or non-profit to apply, although some sponsors do require this. We will do our best to match teams to the best available sponsor if they provide a complete picture using the application process.

ORTOP Team Support MAY be able to provide your team with:

  • FIRST National Registration
  • CITY SHAPER Challenge Set
  • Oregon Tournament Application Fee
  • A LEGO Robot Kit

Schools will be out in just a couple weeks! Wow, where has the year gone? ORTOP is hard at work building next year and resources for all teams to use. As a part of that, I will be gone to visit with FIRST and the other partners around North America for the next week. This means there will be a delay in email communication and updates. Look for some upcoming excitement. Upcoming fun. And some more space-themed adventures, before this summer is over!

Best Wishes,
Loridee
