IO17: Your Help is Needed!

Greetings FIRST LEGO League Oregon,

In today's FIRST LEGO League Oregon Update we will cover these items:
  1. Coach End of Season Survey - Closes April 11! (Required for team support coaches)
  2. Share FIRST LEGO League at the Junior Expo!
  3. Ronler Acres Open House
  4. Summer Workshop Requests!
  5. IMPORTANT - Next Blast UPDATES

If you are new to this email or blog this is the place where you will find all of the OREGON specific FIRST LEGO League information. If you are in the FIRST Dashboard as a team coach of a registered team for INTO ORBIT you will be added to this list every week for the rest of the competition season. Every update this season begins with IO (Into Orbit) and a number, that number lets you know which update it is, if you miss an update you can find it on our blog.

1) Coach End of Season Survey - Closes April 11! (Required for team support coaches)

All coaches and mentors feedback in this survey is critical for determining the future of FIRST LEGO League in Oregon. If your team received ORTOP Team Financial Support your signed letter REQUIRES that you complete the survey (both coaches, please and thank you!) Financial Support recipients will need to know (or be able to estimate) additional money earned, given, or spent on the team, so make sure you have that information.

Even if your team did not receive team financial support your feedback on our events, workshops, and the make-up of your team (not demographics), and if you know it, funding of your team; are very important factors that I would like to use in this year's planning. I want to have a better understanding of all Oregon coaches, even teams who are leaving or moving on. The only way I can get that is if you complete this 30-minute survey.

Like everything the way it is? - that feedback is very important too!

ORTOP will be offline from April 8-12 for Strategic Planning

Please complete this survey if you worked with a FIRST LEGO League team this year!  The survey does use skip logic.

*The collection of your team number is not being used as part of the data analysis, it is just to ensure all team support teams are accounted for. Your responses will be used anonymously.*

2) Share FIRST LEGO League at the Junior Expos!

Teams are still needed to share FIRST LEGO League at the FIRST LEGO Leauge Jr expos next weekend! Several FIRST LEGO League Jr teams are looking forward to FIRST LEGO League and have many questions to ask.

We do not have any team on Saturday, April 13th in the afternoon from 1:45-4:15pm
We could use a second team for each expo!

If you are interested in sharing FIRST please use this form!

If your team is MOVING UP to FIRST Tech Challenge, sharing at the expo should be included in your Engineering Notebook, please make sure you take photos!

3) Ronler Acres Open House

ORTOP will once again be participating in the Ronler Acres Open House. Your team is needed to help showcase FIRST LEGO League at this event and to support our activities for the kids. If your team is available for a couple hours on May 4th between 10AM and 4PM
Please complete this form to indicate your interest!

4) Summer Workshop Requests!

Spring Break is over, the sun is peeking through the clouds, and summer is just around the corner. That means it's time to request an ORTOP FIRST LEGO League Workshop for your community! While ORTOP is working to bring workshops in series to Portland, Medford (already scheduled!) and Bend, we welcome your requests for these locations as well, especially if you have a location in the metro area you would like us to use.

Medford Workshops will happen on 2 Saturdays - Workshop 1 and 2 will happen on Saturday, May 11 and Workshop 3 and Programming will happen on Saturday, May 25. - Sign up will be available in the next email!

ORTOP's Free Coach, Mentor, and Parent workshops are designed to take any adult from the power button to leading a FIRST LEGO League team. They are run in a couple throughout the summer months to provide all coaches with a good starting place for their teams. Workshops II, III, and the Programming Workshop are all good workshops for returning coaches to revisit periodically.  If your team will be requesting Team Financial Support attending a workshop is a requirement.  The workshops are for adults and teen mentors only!

5) IMPORTANT - Next Blast UPDATES

Normally, I would not have another email so soon, but FIRST has just started releasing a lot of FIRST LEGO League useable robotics system that is different from MINDSTORMS. We will also know all of the Oregon teams bound for the World Championship in Houston (FIRST Robotics Competition is finishing this weekend!) The next email will primarily be INFORMATION HEAVY.  All returning coaches will want to read it!
information and LEGO has made a big announcement about a new
Some items we will share are:

  • Team Meeting Guides - what do we know?
  • Printed Engineering Notebooks?
  • SPIKE PRIME - what is it? Should you use it?
  • Houston World Festival - NEW GAME PREVIEW.
  • Winners of the "What the Theme" Contest

Thank you all for doing what you do! I want you to know that I think each and every FIRST LEGO League coach and volunteer is making a tremendous impact on all of the children in our program and who come into contact with our team members. If you step back, you can see that each time you let the kids work through a problem, explore a different way to solve a challenge, and support them through a setback is unique and special. I know these kids will take these little steps forward with them for their lives, wherever that might take them.

Best Wishes,
Loridee
