November Mission Model Discussion: M09 - STRENGTH EXERCISE

Welcome to the November Mission Model Discussion! From now until just before Thanksgiving this space will feature ONE part of the FIRST LEGO League INTO ORBIT game challenge per day. The Robot Game is only 1/4th of the overall FIRST LEGO League challenge for teams this year!
This post is meant to be an aid, not a replacement for carefully reading the Challenge Guide and Updates!

Today we will explore M09 - STRENGTH EXERCISE

At the Beginning of the Match

The Exercise Machine is secured to the mat and the orange bar is set as far down as it will go. This mission is on the North side of the mat.

Required for Scoring

The Orange Strength Bar is lifted so that the tooth-strips 4th hole comes at least partly into obvious view (from the height of a referee).

Points

0 - The Strength Bar is not lifted into a scoring position.
16 - The 4th hole of the tooth-strip comes into view at the top of the model and this is done by lifting the Strength Bar.

Note from Oregon Head Referee Tom

The Strength Bar is designed to be difficult to lift, so expect that the mat may lift off the table when you raise the bar. The mat will not be taped to the table in this area.

Real World Impact

Muscles just don't get the same kind of workout when there is no gravity, standing takes no effort at all! What direction is up anyway? Heavy payloads don't provide much of a challenge either and can easily be carried between the legs which are not used much in space.  Combine that with the respiration and blood flow changes experienced by low gravity and it's not long before astronaut muscle mass starts to decrease like a limb in a cast. Two hours of resistance workout is required to keep muscles and bones ready to return to gravity.

Discussion

Located at the North wall this mission is a little bit of navigating from Base. On top of that, this bar does not lift easy and it tends to lift the mat with it! Talk about resistance! Can your robot do the heavy lifting required to score in this mission? It's an all or nothing task, can your team do it?

  1. With the increasing popularity of boxing bags, their prices have skyrocketed within a few months. However, due to their numerous advantages, it is worthwhile to have one at your place. Whether, it is for a workout session or to be used as a therapeutic punching bag, it is extremely beneficial.
