Oregon Update: 17

Welcome to the official FIRST LEGO League Oregon Update. All Oregon FIRST LEGO League Coaches are automatically added to this list weekly! In each update, which you can read in an email or on our blog (cross-posted on both G+ and Facebook), you will find out what is happening in Oregon, the important things from Headquarters in NH, and tips to keep your team on track. This blog will be posted nearly weekly and all posts are archived. All official updates this season will be numbered HD# If you've missed an update, please read the archive to catch up!

1) Help Needed at the Championships!

Both Intel Oregon FIRST LEGO League Championship Tournaments are this coming weekend. Volunteers are still needed to fill many roles at this event. Some roles that could still use volunteers are:
  • Judge Assistant - queue teams and time judging sessions in a quiet hallway
  • Pit Runners - bring teams from the upstairs pit to the main floor competition arena
  • Play by Play - announce the games live!
  • Registration - help check in teams in the morning
  • Score Display - enter the scores into the display software
  • Traffic / Security - help people find their way around, check that only badged people are upstairs, monitor the elevator.
  • Photographer - our photographer has informed us he won't be able to return next year and we'd like to open the floor to a new photographer to join us. Must have your own equipment!
  • Practice Table Assistant
  • Judges (especially robot design) - must be an adult unaffiliated with a participating team.
  • Score Runner - take the score sheets to the scorekeeper and help read them in.
Teens 13 and over are encouraged to volunteer! Help is needed both days, but if you only have one day to help, more help is needed on Sunday!

Sign up at www.firstinspires.org.  Once you have a FIRST account you can use these links to volunteer for the event. DON'T FORGET TO SUBMIT YOUR BACKGROUND SCREENING if you are over 18.

2) Join us in person or online for the Intel Oregon FIRST LEGO League Championships
The Intel Oregon FIRST LEGO League Championships are free and open to the public! Please join us at Liberty High School in Hillsboro for two days of exciting FIRST LEGO League fun!

Can't  make it to Liberty High School, but still want to see the action. We are planning to live stream action on the Red and Blue tables again this year! You can tune in using these links.
Want to plan your trip? Want to see whos competing and when? Check out all the details on our Championship Tournament Website!  I hope we'll see you there!

3) FIRST LEGO League Teams Making Headlines!
Part of the FIRST LEGO League experience is documenting and sharing what we learn. Oregon teams are stepping up and doing that in a big way - thank you teams for sending me these links!

The Robotic Animals have shared information they learned in creating their project with their local community paper in Cedar Mills.

Also available are the recordings from the Salem Qualifying Tournament by CCTVSalem! Tune in live or order them online! That's channel 22 in Salem.
December 2's tournament will air:
1/13/2018 at 3:00 PM
December 3's tournament will air:
1/11/2018 at 5:30 PM

Does your team have exciting news to share, a helpful video, or something cool to share with our community? Send a link to Loridee and we'll share in our upcoming newsletters and on our Facebook page!

4) Thank Your Sponsors
Please take time to reach out to all of your team's sponsors with a note and photo, of gratitude. If your team can share a personal story of how much the sponsorship meant to their team, what the team learned, and what they plan to do with those new skills it helps your sponsor see how much their contribution really does make an impact.

If your team received an ORTOP sponsorship this year, we are putting together packages for each sponsor. Please feel free to email photos and stories to fllthankyou@ortop.org or send them by mail to the ORTOP office at 4800 SW Griffith Drive Suite 215, Beaverton OR 97005. Just want to thank our sponsors for keeping the overall program costs down and helping to make the program accessible to all of Oregon's youth - we are happy to send along your thank you as well!

Not sure who your sponsors are? Look at anything you didn't pay for personally, who provided that? Was it a space to keep your things? A safe place to meet? Maybe it was your parents or a coach. Maybe it was your school. They need a thank you too! What about help from your community? Consider presenting to your school or school board. Did your team receive funding from the state of Oregon? Write a note to your local representatives to thank them for supporting FIRST LEGO League in Oregon.

5) Season Follow-up & Send Your Story
Please be on the lookout for end-of-season follow-up items. If your team received Team Financial Support for the HYDRO DYNAMICS season from ORTOP you will have some items due this month and next. Please see your award letter to see what is required. Some teams need to submit a financial report, others just need to complete a survey that will be sent soon. I do have some post-season queries for all coaches so look for that in an upcoming update.

Again this year, I'm eager to hear your team's story. The good, the better, the sad, and the hard; share it all! Even if you feel your year was pretty normal, I'd like to know what that looks like. From my spot here at the ORTOP office, I don't get to see what happens on your teams. To be a better resource for you, I need to know what you know. So let me have it!  I look forward to reading your team stories.  Please email your stories to Loridee-Wetzel@ortop.org

See you this weekend!
Best Wishes,
Loridee
