Oregon Update: 8

Welcome to the official FIRST LEGO League Oregon Update. All Oregon FIRST LEGO League Coaches are automatically added to this list weekly! In each update, which you can read in an email or on our blog (cross-posted on both G+ and Facebook), you will find out what is happening in Oregon, the important things from Headquarters in NH, and tips to keep your team on track. This blog will be posted nearly weekly and all posts are archived. All official updates this season will be numbered HD# If you've missed an update, please read the archive to catch up!

1) Thank You, Intel and Thermo Fisher Scientific
Volunteers at Intel and Thermo Fisher Scientific in Hillsboro have been hard at work making sure that every team in Oregon has a fair and fun tournament experience this December. For 2 days volunteers have built most of the Oregon HYDRO DYNAMICS tournament fields. These challenge kits will be used at Qualifying Tournaments around the state and at the state championships in January. Your team can be assured that the competition, practice, and judging tables have been built with care to give your team's robot the best chance for success this season.

All Volunteers who participated in these events are also reporting their hours to contribute to ORTOP with volunteer matching grants. Many employers around Oregon allow coaches and event volunteers to record their hours to donate to FIRST LEGO League Oregon or the schools where the team they work with is located. Matching funds are used to pay match tournament registration costs for teams who expressed financial need and to cover the program costs of FIRST LEGO League for the state of Oregon. If your company has a matching program that does not include Oregon Robotics Tournament & Outreach Program, please contact us right away so we can get that started!

2)  FIRST LEGO League Team Information "Typo Form"

Google Water cooling system
The Typo Form is now OPEN. It will CLOSE FOREVER on SUNDAY NIGHT at MIDNIGHT. No more changes will be available to your team until the Qualifying Tournament. You may correct the TEAM NAME, the TEAM AFFILIATION, or the LEAD COACH information. Please ONLY enter information for things that MUST be changed. I have to do this by hand and it takes a lot of time away from other tasks. If you only need to correct your team affiliation leave the other boxes blank.

SEE WHAT YOUR TEAM INFORMATION IS - please check the time stamp to see updates. All of this is done MANUALLY and it takes time.

3)  More FIRST LEGO League Tables Available

  • Bethany -  Wooden Table Available for Free, <see email version>
  • Bethany - Table ready to pick up near the door of <see email version>
  • Aurora/Wilsonville - Wooden Table Available $80,<see email version>

4) TWO Coaches are REQUIRED Before You Can Access Your Team Roster

I'm receiving lots of confusion regarding how to make sure your team is ready for the tournament check in process. While I typically don't cover the Roster in full until November, there are some steps your team needs to make sure you have in place before you start the process.

Your team will not be able to create a Roster AT ALL unless both of your coaches have accepted their roles through the FIRST system.  Both coaches MUST have a green check mark by the background check. Both coaches must have signed this year's Consent Form.

Here is how to check to see if your coaches have everything they need to have done.

  • Go to www.firstinspires.org
  • Login with the prompt in the upper right corner
  • On your DASHBOARD select your team (if you have more than 1 you will need to check each team)
  • Select Contact Options -> Manage Contacts under Team Contacts /Roster in the middle column
  • Your Primary Contacts should have a Lead Coach/Mentor 1 and a Lead Coach/Mentor 2.
  • Both Coaches should have 2 green checkmarks under their name
  • When you scroll to the bottom of the page you should see YOUTH MEMBERS with the option to Download Youth Team Member Paperwork and Invite Parents/Guardians
If Either of your coaches is missing a green checkmark they need to login and complete that item from their profile menu.
  • Go to www.firstinspires.org
  • Login with the prompt in the upper right corner
  • Using the Arrow by their name in the upper right corner select the incomplete item (either Consent Form or Youth Screening)
  • For the Consent Form sign the digital document
  • For the Youth Screening follow the prompts to Verified Volunteers
    • You do not need to pay anything!
    • You do not need to provide your Social Security Number, it does not cause a problem to say you do not have one.
5 ) Helpful Handouts from Intel and Tualatin Water District
Did you miss the Information Session the last two weeks? Intel and Tualatin Water District have provided some handouts for all teams to use.
Look for more information later this week!

Best Wishes,
Loridee
